You could make good money working from home writing content for blogs and websites around the world. You do not have to have a college degree, but you should enjoy writing and have done some writing already.
So how do you start?
Write clearly and write fast
First, you have to write grammatically correct, properly punctuated, interesting content quickly. The length of the content varies, obviously, but 400-500 words per article is average, although assignments could be 1,000 words or longer. Turnaround time is often fast– a day or two is not unusual.
To land an assignment or job you will need writing samples to show prospects or potential employers. If you have already been writing content for your own or other people’s blogs or websites to show as examples of your work, all the better.
Knowing SEO is a must
Results count. Most companies will assume that you have a solid knowledge of SEO because they expect your content to attract viewers and provide results, usually in the form of increased traffic, sales or inquiries. Not certain about your SEO know-how? Take this free course to brush up your knowledge.
What you need: a newish computer with fast internet access. Some companies that hire content writers require applicants to pass a test before considering employing you. You may also have to sell yourself as the best writer for the job. If you have specialized knowledge of a field–for example, banking or insurance or petcare or whatever–be sure to tell the person who would be hiring you if your knowledge is relevant. Your special knowledge will give you an edge.
Where to find these work from home jobs: There are companies that hire writers to handle a regular stream of assignments, usually for their own network of website and blogs. This can end up being very much like a 9-to-5 job, even though you work remotely. More often, content writers work freelance, landing individual assignments through postings on Upworks or Fiverr, sites that specialize in freelance work. Indeed and ZipRecruiter also have listings for freelance writers. As always: read the reviews of every company that you are considering working for or working with. Also carefully check how often and by what method you will be paid.
