Work-from-Home moderating sites and blogs

Being a Moderator (or a “Mod”) can be fun, demanding, maddening and a good way to make money from the convenience and comfort of your home armed primarily with your computer.

Tens of thousands of Moderators are hired around the world to oversee the daily flow of activity on websites, forums, chat rooms and blogs where users upload content they’ve created–for example, posts to Facebook or photos to Pinterest–to make sure the content meets the site’s standards. Some “ninja-level” Mods even handle several sites or blogs at once.

Dealing with spammers and trolls

And it is very important for Mods to stay alert to all the changes that occur on the site when monitoring it. Daily, sneaky people are trying to post materials that are against the site’s rules. So part of the job is to remove postings by spammers, trolls and others who break the guidelines.

Mods are also expected to answer user questions, reply to complaints, respond to email, as well as approve new members. To approve new members moderators may have to do some online research to see if the person is really who they say they are.

While there is definitely an enforcer element to being a Mod, having good people skills and good people judgment are important. Many owners encourage their Mods to delete the offensive post and give warnings to people who bend or break the rules before throwing that person off the site.

What you need: a newish computer with fast internet access, good people skills, common sense plus a willingness to be tough if needed. Speaking and reading English is necessary and having a second language increases your chances of employment.

Where to find these work from home jobs: The most obvious place: Facebook. A company that supplies moderators to other companies is Liveworld. You will also find Moderator jobs and the specific requirements for each company by going to Indeed.com, or Flexjobs or Glassdoor.com and search for “Moderator jobs – work remotely”. A feature I like about Glassdoor is that there are reviews of companies by current or past employees. Always check the reviews of every company you are considering working for or working with.
